CTOnews.com, Oct. 4 (Xinhua)-- SaurikIT, LLC, the parent company of Cydia, has appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals after U.S. district Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers dismissed its antitrust lawsuit against Apple last month, according to a court document.

SaurikIT sued Apple at the end of 2020, claiming that the company had an illegal monopoly on the distribution of iOS apps, given that App Store is the only authorized market in which users can download apps on iPhone and iPad. The complaint also alleges that Apple "has been trying to kill other app stores", including Cydia.

Cydia was launched in early 2008, a few months before Apple's own app store, App Store. The application allows jailbroken iPhone or iPad users to install applications other than App Store, as well as customize the appearance and functionality of the iOS system. For example, long before Apple launched the control center on iPhone, there was an app called SBSettings on Cydia that provided similar functionality.

The lawsuit alleges that Cydia is an "earlier App Store than App Store" and "the first comprehensive solution" to extend iPhone functionality, but it is worth noting that there is also an unofficial app store called Installer, which was launched before Cydia.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple has repeatedly denied that App Store is a monopoly, given that App Store faces competition from Google's Play store on Android devices. Apple has also repeatedly mentioned the privacy and security advantages of App Store, arguing that third-party app stores on iPhone may expose users to fraud, malware and other risks.
