CTOnews.com, October 4 (Xinhua)-- earlier today, the European Parliament voted to adopt standard chargers for all smartphones and various consumer electronic devices, including Apple products, by the end of 2024.

The new rules will directly and most seriously affect Apple, which still uses Lightning ports from a decade ago for many of its products. Macrumors lists Apple products that still use the Lightning interface, which must switch to the USB-C interface by the end of 2024 to comply with the new law.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple launched the Lightning port in 2012 as part of a redesign of iPhone 5, which officials say improves durability and ease of use compared to the 30-pin interface used by the previous iPhone. Apple has called the Lightning interface "the modern interface for the next decade."

Although Apple has introduced the USB-C interface to most of its iPad products, its most popular products still use the Lightning interface. At the same time, almost all other products in the industry have shifted to USB-C, and the interface has become the standard for consumer products for manufacturers and customers.
