Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Oct. 4 (Xinhua)-- three researchers from Heriwatt University, Paul Sabatier University and the University of Sussex have developed an artificial intelligence-based device that uses a laser to detect and automatically shoot cockroaches and kill cockroaches, effectively working at distances of 1.2m. In their paper published in Oriental Entomology, Ildar Rakhmatulin, Mathieu Lihoreau and Jose Pueyo described the device and its performance when tested on real insects.
This is not Rakhmatulin's first project in this field: he has previously built a system that uses Raspberry Pi single board computers and lasers to detect and kill mosquitoes. In the latest version, the engineer replaced the single board computer with a more efficient NVIDIA Jetson Nano for image processing algorithms. The system uses two cameras to determine the position of the insect, which is converted into an analog signal with a voltage of 0 to 5V, which then enters the galvanometer, controls the rotation angle of the two mirrors, and directs the laser beam in the right direction.
CTOnews.com learned that Rakhmatulin tested the system with different laser power: at low rates, the beam can make the cockroach fly, which can force it to leave some places; at high power, the laser can directly kill the cockroach. Rakhmatulin posted all the materials related to his project on GitHub and pointed out that the total cost of assembling the parts of the device would not exceed $250 (about 1775 yuan). He added that some enthusiasts have begun to test his inventions on other pests, including bumblebees. The device is expected to be more effective than traditional products such as mechanical traps and chemicals, which tend to damage the environment and kill all insects, not just pests.
In future versions of the device, Rakhmatulin plans to make the laser beam thinner and train the system to target specific body parts of insects. But at home, he still advises against using his invention, because the device can not only kill cockroaches, but also hurt human eyes.
