CTOnews.com Canon will build a new semiconductor equipment factory in eastern Japan, according to Nikkei Shimbun.

CTOnews.com understands that the new plant will be built in Tochigi Prefecture and will begin operations in spring 2025. The total investment will exceed 50 billion yen (about 2.455 billion yuan), including construction costs and installation of production equipment, and the company aims to double its current capacity.

Canon plans to increase the throughput of lithography equipment, which is part of a critical process for etching circuits in semiconductors. The company will also consider producing next-generation systems capable of manufacturing state-of-the-art fine circuits at low cost.

Canon currently produces similar equipment at two factories in Japan, which is used to make chips for applications such as car control systems. The new factory will be built on an empty lot of the existing factory, covering an area of about 70000 square meters. This will be Canon's first new facility for lithography equipment built in 21 years, and construction will begin in 2023.
