CTOnews.com, Oct. 3 (Reuters)-Australian telecom giant Optus confirmed on Monday local time that the personal information of about 1.2 million customers and at least one valid form of identity had been compromised in the network loopholes faced last month.

Last month, an anonymous online account posted the personal details of 10200 Optus customers. The violation was expected to affect about 10 million Optus customers, equivalent to about 40 per cent of Australia's population, and drew severe criticism from the Australian government.

Later on Monday, Optus said the vulnerability also affected the out-of-date ID and personal information of about 900000 customers, and clarified that "the information disclosed does not contain valid or current document ID numbers of about 7.7 million customers."

Singtel, the company's parent company, said it was assessing the cost of large-scale violations by Australia's second-largest telecoms company.

Optus said it had notified affected customers about data breaches after the Australian government urged it to speed up notifications to 10200 customers whose personal information had been disclosed.

CTOnews.com previously reported that Australian authorities are investigating possible clues. The Sydney Morning Herald published a report yesterday that Optus had received blackmail threats to pay 1 million dollars in cryptocurrency or hackers would sell the personal information of millions of customers. Optus customer data and other "vouchers" can be purchased from "Dark net" and other sources, Australian Federal Police told Reuters.
