Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, Oct. 3, the latest Omdia report shows that due to the impact of inventory clearance, inflation and geopolitics on the consumer electronics market, cover shipments are expected to fall from 6.36 billion in 2021 to 6.08 billion in 2022, a year-on-year decline of 4.5%.

CTOnews.com learned that Omdia said it was the first time that shipments of cover plates had shrunk. If the above factors can be mitigated by the end of 2022, shipments will rebound slightly in 2023. In terms of long-term forecasts, the slight contraction in shipments will continue for several years, mainly due to market saturation and weaker demand in the IT and CE sectors.

Mobile apps account for the bulk of shipments, accounting for 48.7% in 2021, according to the report. Cover glass is alkali glass, which mainly includes sodium calcium glass, aluminum silicate glass and lithium aluminum silicate glass, which plays a leading role in mobile phone applications. Lithium aluminosilicate glass (37.7%) surpassed aluminosilicate glass (33.6%) to account for the largest share of shipments in 2021.

In addition, as a result of Apple's adoption of iPhone, glass-ceramics will have a share of 3.1% in 2021. By contrast, Android manufacturers have a low adoption rate of glass-ceramics, mainly because of limited production capacity. The use of composite panels is on the rise, because the material is more cost-effective in 3D molding than glass, so more composite plates are used in the back cover. Shipments of ceramic back covers peaked in 2020, but shipments are expected to continue to decrease due to high costs and limited suppliers.

On the other hand, CPI (colorless polyimide) and UTG (ultra-thin glass) are widely used in smartphones with foldable AMOLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) displays, such as Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip series, Huawei Mate X series, Xiaomi Fold series, OPPO Find N series, Motorola Razr series, Glory Magic V series and Vivo X-Fold series. At present, the proportion of foldable screen phones in total smartphone shipments is still limited, but Omdia expects shipments to increase gradually as costs are further reduced and problems such as creasing, impact resistance and scratch resistance are further improved.
