October 3, Tesla released data on car production and delivery in the third quarter of 2022 on Sunday, local time. Data show that Tesla produced 366000 cars and delivered 344000 in the quarter, an increase of more than 100000 compared with 240000 in the same period last year, but still below analysts' expectations.

Specifically, in the third quarter, Tesla produced a total of 365923 new cars, of which 345988 were for Model 3 and Model Y and 19935 for Model S and ModelX. During the same period, Tesla delivered a total of 343830 new cars, including 325158 for Model 3 and Model Y and 18672 for Model S and ModelX.

In terms of production and delivery, Tesla made great progress in the third quarter. By contrast, Tesla produced 237823 cars in the same period last year and 258580 in the second quarter of this year. At the same time, Tesla delivered 241300 vehicles in the same period last year, 308600 in the fourth quarter of 2021, 310048 in the first quarter of 2022 and 254695 in the second quarter of 2022.

However, Tesla's third-quarter delivery still fell short of analysts' expectations of 364660 vehicles, which the company blamed on logistics challenges. "as our production continues to grow, ensuring vehicle delivery capacity at a reasonable cost is becoming more and more challenging during these logistics peak periods," said Tesla. "

Many analysts are also concerned that demand for Tesla's cars could fall because of a weak global economy, soaring commodity prices, executive turnover (Andrej Karparis, head of AI's business, left in July) and difficulties in increasing production at new factories in Germany and Texas in the US.

After Tesla released the delivery data, Dan Ives, an analyst at Wade Bush Securities, said: "marginal economic factors still have a negative impact on Tesla, mainly in logistics. But I think there may also be a demand problem. There is a dark cloud hanging over the car industry, and Tesla is not immune."

Ford Motor Company said last month that inflation-related costs would be $1 billion higher than expected in the third quarter, and a shortage of parts delayed the delivery of new cars. People familiar with the matter also revealed that Apple will abandon plans to increase production of the new iPhone this year because of the expected surge in demand.

"I think electric cars may encounter more difficulties, such as people being hesitant and less eager to buy new things," said Ed Moya, a senior market analyst at OANDA.

Elon Musk, chief executive of Tesla, admitted on Sunday that the customer experience was affected by the quarter-end delivery peak and that he aimed to achieve "more stable" delivery between quarters. "We are trying to quell the crazy wave of delivery at the end of the quarter in order to reduce the cost of acceleration and ease the pressure on Tesla's team," he said. "

Last year, he said Tesla had a "crazy delivery wave" at the end of each quarter because cars made at his Shanghai factory were exported to Europe and other countries in the first half of the quarter before being sold locally in China. According to internal emails, Tesla again asked California employees to help deliver a large number of new cars to eagerly waiting customers in the final days at the end of the third quarter.

Tesla has never disclosed car production and delivery by region. In July, Tesla suspended most production at the Shanghai plant to upgrade the plant. But by August, the company's production and delivery in China had rebounded. In the United States, Tesla disbanded the entire AI department at the end of the second quarter and laid off staff in other departments. Musk also requires all Tesla employees to work in the office for at least 40 hours a week, even if they were previously allowed to work remotely.

After that, some employees were fired, others resigned, and those who returned to the office found the office environment crowded throughout the third quarter, making it difficult for many jobs to be done properly. including the car factory in Fremont, Calif., and the battery plant outside Reno, Nevada.

In September, Tesla executives spoke at a plenary meeting with employees at a giant factory in Nevada, celebrating the new production record and praising employees for their hard work.

As previously reported, Tesla executives said at the time that August was a record month for the Fremont plant in terms of production, and that the company's new plant in Austin, Texas, had achieved seven consecutive days of production of 1000 cars a week, an exciting milestone.

According to internal plans, Tesla has set an ambitious target to produce nearly 495000 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year. The goal was set against a backdrop of increasingly bleak global growth prospects, and Mr Musk himself told senior management in June that he had a "super bad feeling" about the economy and planned layoffs.

In a conference call in July, Mr Musk initially said macroeconomic uncertainty could have an impact on demand for his electric cars, but when analysts pressed for details, he said the company had not a demand problem but a production problem.

Tesla has expanded the production capacity of the Shanghai factory. Troy Troy Teslike, a data tracker for Tesla, wrote on Twitter that Tesla's backlog of car orders fell in September, especially in China.
