Microsoft regularly improves its Teams software while adding new features. Now, Microsoft has detailed a new initiative driven by artificial intelligence (AI) that can make Teams calls sound better, especially in harsh network conditions.

Users' audio content in Microsoft Teams calls is sent in essentially "packets". These packets may be lost due to poor network connection, resulting in audio distortion.

Although Microsoft can't really solve the problem of users' Internet connection, the company uses packet loss concealment (PLC) technology in Teams to make users' voices sound better in a challenging network environment. At a very high level, PLC uses artificial intelligence models to identify lost packets in audio transmission, and then uses predictions to fill any gaps.

Microsoft says it uses deep learning technology to achieve this improvement. The company claims that the traditional model can fill 20-40 millisecond gaps, but its PLC model is significantly better for Teams because it can fill up to 80 millisecond audio gaps.

While Microsoft trained the PLC model on 600 hours of open source data, CTOnews.com learned that it also collected "millions of anonymous network samples", or "traces" of real Teams calls, to test its model. After the release of the PLC model, participants with poor network conditions reported a performance improvement of about 15 per cent.

Microsoft stressed that its Teams PLC model runs entirely locally and only when the quality of the network is poor. Recently, the Teams PLC model has been applicable to Windows customers, is currently being tested on Mac, and will soon enter the mobile domain.
