CTOnews.com, October 2, with the arrival of the iPhone 14 series, Apple has also applied the latest sensors and safety technologies to it, such as "car accident detection" function, which can detect whether a user has had a car accident. If a car accident is detected, it will prompt you to call the emergency service. If the user does not respond within 20 seconds, it will automatically initiate an emergency call and play the audio message to the emergency service. Tell the other person that you have been in a serious car accident and provide them with your latitude and longitude coordinates and an approximate search radius.

CTOnews.com has learned that the iPhone and Apple Watch models that currently support the "car accident detection" function include:

IPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models running the latest version of iOS

Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE (Generation 2), and Apple Watch Ultra running the latest version of watchOS

As a new feature, users have expressed concern about the practicality of "car accident detection". So the Wall Street Journal teamed up with an YouTuber driver in Michigan to test whether they could get the new iPhone to trigger this security feature.

They put the iPhone 14 and Google Pixel in the derby, the Apple Watch Ultra tied to the driver's wrist, and then another iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Google Pixel 6 in a garbage truck / scrap truck that was about to hit.

The test will simulate a car accident through a scrap car parked in a Derby car (driven by a professional Derby driver) and see which devices successfully triggered the accident detection, with mixed results, so the Wall Street Journal contacted Apple and asked it for advice.

An Apple spokesman said the test conditions did not meet the minimum requirements for iPhone to trigger the function (the sensor received enough signals), so it could not be triggered. It is not connected to Bluetooth or CarPlay, which indicates that the car is in use and that the vehicle may not have traveled enough distance before the collision to prove that it is driving. He said that if the iPhone received these additional instructions and its GPS showed that the car was driving on a real road, then the alarm would be more likely.

Of course, neither the Google nor Apple-related detection features can guarantee 100% detection of all types of car accidents / crashes. Apple even added a disclaimer under the "car accident detection" setting on the new iPhone.

The car accident detection feature is designed to detect "serious" accidents, such as "cars, minivans, SUV, pick-up trucks and other passenger cars", according to Apple's website. Apple warned that the feature was "unable to detect all car accidents", so it was not foolproof.

Apple said its car accident detection function relies on "advanced motion algorithms designed by Apple, after more than 1 million hours of real driving and collision data training":

Motion sensors: all devices have a three-axis gyroscope and a high gravity accelerometer that can sample more than 3000 motions per second. This means that the device can detect the exact time of the impact, as well as any changes in the vehicle's motion or trajectory.

Microphone: the microphone is used to detect loud sound levels that may indicate a collapse. Apple says the microphone will be turned on only when driving is detected and no actual sound will be recorded.

Barometer: if the airbag is unfolded when the window is closed, the barometer can detect a change in pressure.

GPS: readings can be used to detect speed before a crash and any sudden lack of movement, and to inform the device that it is on its way.

CarPlay and Bluetooth: when connected, they give the algorithm another signal that the phone is in the car and begin to pay attention to possible accidents.
