He believes that China has a population of 1.4 billion, and there is a great demand for large aircraft. China, as a large civil aviation country, cannot rely on the import of foreign aircraft for a long time. There is also a risk of sanctions by buying aircraft from abroad, so China must develop its own large aircraft.

We spend tens of billions or hundreds of billions of dollars on airplanes every year. The logic in the past is: it is better to build than to buy and to rent. We're gonna turn it upside down now! First of all, we have to spend more money to develop and build our own aircraft, so as to form independent and independent capabilities.

He pointed out that large aircraft is the flower of industry, the representative of the high-end equipment manufacturing industry, the landmark project of an innovative country, and the symbol of a manufacturing power. Whether a big plane can be built or not represents the level of industrialization of a country. To be able to build large airplanes and aero-engines, this country is at a high-end manufacturing level, which is also a reflection of the overall strength of the country.

Zhang Yanzhong also revealed that more than 200,000 people, more than 20 provinces and cities, more than 200 enterprises and more than 70 colleges and universities have participated in the research and development of C919.

He said: our C919 aircraft is very advanced, with relatively low fuel consumption, relatively many advanced materials, relatively light weight, good cabin comfort and spacious space. environmental protection also meets or exceeds the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and can reach the level of Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 in performance.

Zhang Yanzhong is currently the director of the national large aircraft special expert advisory committee; the director of the national "two aircraft" (aero-engine and gas turbine) special expert advisory committee; the chief designer of large aircraft independent engineering; and the head of the expert advisory group of Comac. It can be said that the C919 aircraft was born under the strong promotion and guidance of Zhang Yanzhong and other core experts.
