CTOnews.com New York State is following California's lead by requiring that all new cars sold in the state by 2035 be electric or plug-in hybrids.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that to achieve this goal, 35% of new cars must be zero-emission by 2026 and 60% by 2030. By 2035, new school buses must also achieve zero emissions. Public hearings will be held before the new rules are implemented.
New York's new rules, similar to California's, phase out all fossil-fuel-only car sales by 2035, aiming to reduce passenger car pollution by 25 percent by 2037.
"We had to wait for California to do something because there were some federal requirements that California had to go first, and this was the only time we let them go first," Gov. Hochul said at a news conference. "
CTOnews.com has learned that Governor Hochul has also unveiled a $10 million Drive Clean rebate program. In addition to the $7500 federal rebate, residents can get a $2000 rebate on purchases of more than 60 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. To date, the state has spent $92 million on the program, and the state also announced the installation of its 100th fast charger.
