CTOnews.com Toshiba China announced that the transmission cuprous oxide (Cu2O) solar cell power generation efficiency under development has reached 9.5%, successfully improving the power generation efficiency of the previous version of Toshiba's battery by 8.4% by 1.1 percentage points. And the power generation area (battery size) will be expanded from 3mm square announced in December last year to 10mm×3 mm.

According to the official introduction, this battery is a series solar cell. Two solar cells are stacked together to generate electricity together as a bottom cell and a top cell, respectively, to improve the overall power generation efficiency. Cu2O/ Si series solar cell is to stack this transmissive Cu2O solar cell on a high-efficiency silicon (Si) solar cell with a power generation efficiency of up to 25%. It is estimated that the overall power generation efficiency can reach 28.5%. At the same time, if the electric vehicle (EV) is equipped with this solar battery, it is estimated that the daily charge-free range can reach about 37km.

In addition, Toshiba has begun to develop transmissive Cu2O solar cells of larger size, with the ultimate goal of achieving cell manufacturing technology comparable to Si solar cells to meet mass production needs.

CTOnews.com understands that transmissive Cu2O solar cells achieve efficient power generation by absorbing short-wavelength light such as green, blue and ultraviolet with wavelengths less than 600nm, and efficiently transmit long-wavelength light such as infrared and near-infrared beyond the above wavelengths.
