According to documents submitted by the EU antitrust regulator on Friday, the EU antitrust regulator will decide by November 8 whether to approve Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The deal, by far the largest in the gaming industry, will help Microsoft better compete with rivals such as Tencent and Sony. After a preliminary review, the European Commission may approve the transaction with or without remedial action. If there are serious concerns, the agency can also launch a four-month investigation.

The European Commission is likely to take the latter approach because of recent regulatory concerns about acquisitions by large technology companies, according to people familiar with the matter. A Microsoft spokesman said: "the progress of the European Commission's review of the deal is in line with the expected regulatory timetable and procedures, and we remain confident that the acquisition will be completed in fiscal year 2023."

At the same time, the deal has been deeply investigated by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). CMA expressed concern about the competition issues that could be raised by the deal, while Brad Smith, Microsoft president, said the company was prepared to work with CMA on any issues.

Jim Ryan (Jim Ryan), chief executive and head of PlayStation of Sony Interactive Entertainment, called the terms of the deal "inadequate" and praised CMA's decision to investigate the acquisition.
