CTOnews.com, September 30 (Xinhua)-- Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson has signed a contract to build a 5G network in Greenland, initially covering three towns, local telecom operator Tusass said on Friday. Ten other towns, including Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, will follow.

Tusass said it would deploy Ericsson equipment and Netgear routers to bring high-speed wireless Internet to the sparsely populated island without having to rely on expensive and difficult-to-deploy cables.

Tusass said it plans to invest about 1 billion Danish kroner (about 933 million yuan) to expand Greenland's infrastructure and improve the quality of communications.

According to public information, Greenland is an island with a population of only 56000 and the largest in the world, covering an area of 2166086 square kilometers, 80 per cent of which is covered with ice and snow, exists as an autonomous prefecture of the Kingdom of Denmark and has extensive autonomy (referendum in 2008, formal restructuring in 2009).

According to CTOnews.com, Tusass currently offers three wireless data traffic packages, including DKK 359 for 5GB and DKK 699 for 50GB.
