CTOnews.com, September 30 (Xinhua)-Texas Instruments announced today that its newest 12-inch fab in Richardson, Texas, has begun initial production and will expand in the coming months to meet the future growing semiconductor demand for electronics.

The new RFAB2, connected to RFAB1, is one of six 300mm wafer plants that TI has added to its manufacturing operations. The new plant is more than 30 per cent larger than RFAB1 and provides more than 630000 square feet of total clean room space between the two factories.

Once fully completed, the 15-mile automated viaduct delivery system will seamlessly move wafers between the two fabs, and the Richardson plant will produce more than 100 million analog chips a day, TI said. These chips will be used in everything from renewable energy to electronic products for electric vehicles.

"We are very excited that TI's newest and largest 12-inch fab has begun production as part of TI's investment to improve long-term internal manufacturing capacity," said Kyle Fresner, senior vice president of Texas Instruments Technology and Manufacturing Group.

CTOnews.com learned that TI acquired Utah-based LFAB in 2021 and is preparing for initial production in the coming months. TI also announced a total investment of $30 billion in four new plants in Sherman, Texas, last year. Construction of the first and second plants is under way, and the first plant is expected to start production in 2025.
