CTOnews.com, September 30 (Xinhua)-- today's smartphones have become the biggest competitor to SLR cameras, and Judd Heape, vice president of Qualcomm, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) technology will help smartphones completely surpass SLR cameras in the next three to five years.
Judd Heape, vice president of camera product management at Qualcomm, told Android Authority on Monday that smartphones will surpass SLR cameras and effectively eliminate them in the next few years due to innovations in artificial intelligence technology. "We are still three to five years away from reaching the holy grail of artificial intelligence photography," said the Qualcomm engineer. "
In an interview, Heape explained that artificial intelligence in photography can be divided into four stages. The first stage is the "basic" stage, in which artificial intelligence is used to understand specific things in an image or scene. The second stage is the artificial intelligence control of the so-called 3A function, that is, automatic focus, automatic white balance and automatic exposure adjustment.
Heape estimates that the industry is currently in the third stage of artificial intelligence photography, which is used to understand different segments or elements of the scene. For example, today's smartphones can recognize a person's face and ensure that it is properly exposed.
The industry is about three to five years away from the fourth phase, when artificial intelligence will be able to process the entire image, Heape said. "in the future, we will see more artificial intelligence to understand the scene, the difference between skin and hair, and things like fabric and background," he explained. "and all these pixels are processed in real time, not just in a few seconds after taking a snapshot, but during video shooting like a camera."
Heape added: "imagine a world from the future, and you would say,'I want the picture to look like this National Geographic scene, 'and the artificial intelligence engine would say,' OK, I'm going to adjust the color, texture and white balance and everything to make it look like the picture you just showed me.'"
He claims that the processing power available inside smartphones is a major advantage over SLR cameras. Heape believes that although the device's sensors are small, Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor in smartphones makes its cameras so powerful that it will play a huge role in smartphones surpassing SLR cameras. He thinks the image sensors in phones are good enough to allow mobile photography to surpass DSLRs.
CTOnews.com learned that in May, Terushi Shimizu, chief executive of Sony Semiconductor, also announced that smartphone cameras will surpass the quality of SLR cameras in the next few years, specifically in 2024.
