CTOnews.com, September 29 (Xinhua)-- General Motors and OneD Battery Science announced a joint research and development agreement on September 29, focusing on the potential application of OneD's silicon nanotechnology in GM Ultium battery cells to increase energy storage density, thereby extending battery life and reducing costs.
CTOnews.com learned that General Motors Ventures and Volta Energy Technologies were also involved in round C financing for OneD, which recently completed $25 million in financing.
The focus of this collaboration is on OneD's SINANODE platform, which adds more silicon to the battery anode by fusing silicon nanowires into EV-grade graphite. This material can store 10 times more energy than graphite and greatly increase the energy density, thus leading to smaller, lighter and more efficient battery packs.
"GM designed the Ultium as an extremely flexible platform so that we can improve our batteries as battery technology advances," said Kent Helfrich, GM's chief technology officer, GM's vice president of research and development and president of GM venture capital. "our cooperation with OneD will focus on the mileage, performance and cost of electric vehicles."
GM says it is rapidly expanding its Ultium electric vehicle platform, which will have an annual production capacity of 1 million electric vehicles in North America by 2025. Earlier this year, GM began production at its first Ultium Cells joint venture battery plant in Ohio, with two other U.S. plants under construction and a fourth planned.
At the same time, GM has established the new Wallace Battery Innovation Center (Wallace battery Cell Innovation Center) in Warren, Michigan, building on more than a decade of advanced battery research and development. The center, completed earlier this year, aims to help the development and production of next-generation Ultium batteries and to find a way to quickly deploy to battery manufacturing plants.
