Beijing, September 29 (Xinhua)-- US e-commerce giant Amazon announced on Wednesday local time that workers in its logistics warehouses and delivery systems will receive a round of pay increases: the average starting hourly wage will rise to $19 from $18 in the past.

Amazon's hourly wage increase is helping to recruit new workers and retain existing ones at a time when US consumers are at a peak for gift purchases at the end of the year and the retail industry is having trouble recruiting workers.

Amazon said the wage increase would increase its operating costs by $1 billion next year. The company explained that under the new wage policy, workers in the Amazon system are paid between $16 and $26 an hour (some jobs are lower than the average starting level), depending on where they work and where they work.

An Amazon spokesman said that after the wage adjustment, Amazon's minimum hourly wage in the United States remains unchanged at $15.

It is worth mentioning that Amazon's pay increase comes as some workers in its logistics warehouses continue to press ahead with the unionizing movement. But so far, of the votes completed, only one Amazon logistics warehouse has decided to formally join the union.
