CTOnews.com, Sept. 28 (Xinhua)-- Indian-based manufacturer Tata Motors has launched a new small hatchback all-electric car, starting at $10000.
India's car market has lagged behind its peers in electrification. This is caused by many factors, but the most important of which is that the country has strong protectionist laws in the auto industry, which makes it difficult for foreign carmakers to launch new cars in the country. Especially if there are no local factories for production.
Tesla has repeatedly tried to launch electric cars in India, but has been blocked by relevant policies: he did not build a factory in India first.
This means that India must rely mainly on its own car industry to electrify its passenger cars and solve its transport emissions problems.
Tata Motors, India's largest carmaker, has launched several electric vehicles, about 45000 of which are on Indian roads. Now, the company has launched new and cheaper electric cars, which can greatly accelerate the popularity of electric vehicles in India.
Today, Tata Motors launched the Tiago.ev. Here are all the models of the Tata Tiago.ev, starting at 849000 Indian rupees (about 74712 yuan), equivalent to $10000, and the most expensive model priced at 1.179 million Indian rupees (about 103800 yuan).
In terms of shape and design, the Tata Tiago.ev looks like an ordinary small city car:
In terms of specifications, don't expect too much from a $10000 electric car. For example, it may have one of the smallest battery packs of all electric cars. In the 19 kWh class, some electric motorcycles are equipped with larger battery packs.
Still, Tata Motors claims a 250km (155mil) Tiago.ev with a 19 kWh battery pack, which is based on the Indian MIDC standard. As a result, the electric car is expected to have a shorter mileage in the real world.
Tata Motors says the electric car version with a larger 24 kWh battery pack has a range of up to 315km (194 miles). This is the same capacity as the original Nissan Leaf battery pack, which has a range of just 117km (73 miles), but the car is larger in size and capacity.
CTOnews.com learned that the Tata Tiago.ev also offers DC fast charging. Although no maximum and maximum charging rate was specified, Tata said that "it only takes 30 minutes to recharge to increase the mileage of 110km."
Tata Motors Tiago.ev is now taking pre-orders, and new car delivery is scheduled to begin in January 2023.
