Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com Before NVIDIA released the RTX 40 series, a large number of revelations indicated that the new generation of cards will have high power consumption, especially the RTX 4090 equipped with AD102.

In February of this year, some people said that NVIDIA's next-generation flagship AD102 RTX 40 series graphics card will have 900W TGP power consumption, users had better prepare a 1500W power supply. Nvidia has clarified that the rumor is not true.

Nvidia provides answers to some frequently asked questions on its customer support page, explaining the minimum power requirements for the new card. The bottom line seems to be that as long as the customer has a quality power supply that meets the minimum wattage requirements, then there is no problem.

Simply put, as long as your current power supply has sufficient performance, you don't need to buy a new one.

CTOnews.com understands that the RTX 4090 has a TDP of 450W, so NVIDIA recommends a total power supply of at least 850W. Similarly, the 16GB RTX 4080 only has 320W, and the recommended power supply is 750W, while the 12GB version of the 4080 only needs 700W.

Of course, compared with the previous generation, the power consumption of the new card still has a certain increase, for example, 4090 is 3090Ti, while RTX4080 16GB is 30W lower than RTX3080Ti.

In addition, the 40-series GPU uses a new PCIe 5 16-pin power adapter, but the official comes with an adapter, so you can continue to use the current power supply and cable as long as you meet the minimum power requirements, but there must be some benefits to switching to a new power supply, otherwise you have to plug in three or four 8-pin cables.

Nvidia says the adapter has a reference circuit: "converts the 8-pin plug state to the correct sideband signal per PCIe Gen 5 (ATX 3.0) specification. "It can also tell the GPU if three or four 8-pin connectors are plugged in. If four are detected (600W total), it allows the card to unlock more power headroom for overclocking.

Speaking of which, someone might be curious. Since RTX 40 series graphics cards can use existing power supplies and cables, why change to new connector standards?

Nvidia says PCIe Gen5 power connectors are the new standard for PCIe power supplies. This standard allows you to power your graphics card with a single wire, simplifying cable routing and improving airflow inside the chassis, among other benefits.

In other respects, NVIDIA also said that PCIe 5.0 connectors are rated for 30 cycles, and there is no discount compared to the previous standard.

Finally, previous power supply manufacturers warned that non-ATX 3.0 power supplies and new 16-pin power connectors may be at risk of overcurrent or excessive power. Nvidia now says it encountered a single-vendor problem early in development that has been resolved. Therefore, NVIDIA emphasizes the need to use high-quality power supplies from well-known brands, and many small brand power supplies may not follow PCI-SIG guidelines as strictly as well-known brands.
