CTOnews.com The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) said Tuesday it has approved plans for electric vehicle charging stations in all 50 states in Washington and Puerto Rico, covering about 75000 miles (120700 kilometers) of highways.

The $1 trillion infrastructure bill of November 2021 provides $5 billion to help states install electric vehicle charging stations along interstate highways within five years. USDOT says states now have access to more than $1.5 billion to help build EV charging stations. The White House announced earlier this month that it had approved 35 of the 50 state plans.

"We don't dictate to states, but we do need to make sure they meet basic standards," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said earlier this year.

CTOnews.com has learned that USDOT says states should invest in DC fast charging stations; stations should have at least four ports capable of charging four electric vehicles simultaneously, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure installed every 50 miles (80.5 km) on interstate highways and located within 1 mile of the highway.

Federal funds will cover 80 percent of EV charging costs, and private or state funds will make up the difference.

By 2030, the president wants 50 percent of new car sales to be electric or plug-in hybrids, and 500000 new EV charging stations. But it has yet to support plans to phase out sales of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

The California Air Resources Board voted in August that all new cars sold in the state must be electric or plug-in hybrids by 2035, a landmark move that could accelerate the end of gasoline-powered cars but still must be approved by the U.S. president to take effect.

California will allow automakers to sell up to 20 percent of their models as plug-in hybrids by 2035.
