CTOnews.com, September 27 (Xinhua)-- on May 15, 2021, the rover "Zhu Rong" carried by Tianwen-1, China's first Mars exploration mission, successfully landed in the pre-selected landing area in the southern utopian plain. According to a CCTV news report, Chinese scientists have recently used the scientific data obtained by the Mars exploration mission to reveal the shallow fine structure and physical properties of Mars, which provides an important basis for an in-depth understanding of Mars' geological evolution, environment and climate change.

The exploration area of the "Zhurong" Mars rover is in the south of the utopian plain, the radar frequency band is wide, and its actual maximum detection depth is 80 meters. The utopian plain, the largest impact basin on Mars, may have been a paleo-ocean, indicating that there may have been a habitable environment on Mars in the early days. Detailed information about the underground structure and physical properties of Mars is the key basis for studying the evolution of Martian geology and its habitable environment, and it is also an important part of Mars exploration.

In the latest research, the researchers deeply analyzed the low frequency radar data of the "Zhurong" rover with a detection length of 1171 meters in the first 113 Mars days, and obtained high-precision structural stratigraphic images and stratum physical property information above 80 meters on the shallow surface. it is found that there are two sets of upward thinning sequences under the fire layer a few meters thick in this area. It may reflect the transformation process of fire meter related to water activities for many times since 3.5 billion-3.2 billion years. In addition, one of the main objectives of the Zhurong Mars subsurface detection radar is to detect the current existence of groundwater / ice in the southern utopian plain. The low-frequency radar imaging results show that the reflected signal strength is stable in the depth of 0-80 meters, and the medium has a low dielectric constant, which excludes the possibility of rich water layer under the inspection path. The thermal simulation results further show that liquid water, sulfate or carbonate brine is difficult to exist stably within 100 meters of the landing area of the Mars rover, but the possibility of salt ice can not be ruled out at present.

CTOnews.com learned that the results were published in the international academic journal Nature on the evening of September 26, Beijing time.
