CTOnews.com, September 26 (Xinhua) due to the high energy prices in the UK, the cost of using public charging piles to quickly recharge electric cars is about the same as the cost of fuel, according to a survey by RAC Ltd., a British car service company.

Increases in wholesale natural gas and electricity prices have pushed up the charging price of ordinary UK family cars by 42 per cent to more than 32 pounds since May, RAC said. This is £9.60 more than in May and £13.59 more than a year ago.

The UK plans to ban the sale of new fossil fuel cars after 2035, but many in the industry are concerned about conversion barriers. The price and availability of public charging piles are key issues, especially in cities.

The recent surge in electricity prices has undermined the cost advantage of electric vehicles over polluting internal combustion engines, especially for those who rely entirely on public charging piles because they do not have private parking spaces at home.

For those who are limited to fast and ultra-fast public charging piles commonly used for highway services, the average cost per mile has risen to 18p, compared with 19p for petrol cars and 21p for diesel cars, RAC said.

For those who can rely on household charging piles, the average cost per mile will be limited to 9p after the government introduces energy price controls. Energy price guarantees mean that drivers who can recharge at home will be immune from most price increases.

RAC argues that users who rely on public charging piles unfairly pay 20 per cent VAT, compared with 5 per cent for household energy use.

RAC says the average price of quick-charging piles in the UK is 63.29p per kilowatt-hour (kWh), but some companies charge much more. Us carmaker Tesla has the largest fast-charging network after opening part of its fast-charging network to all brands in May, charging non-Tesla drivers 77p per kilowatt-hour, according to data company ZapMap. InstaVolt has the second largest fast network, charging 66p per kilowatt-hour.
