CTOnews.com Sept. 26, Canonical announced on its official blog that it has joined Connectivity Standards Alliance (connected Standards Alliance, formerly Zigbee Alliance) as a participant member. Canonical will help the Alliance develop open standards for the Internet of things (IoT) and advocate the role of open source software in this area.

Canonical is the first major independent Linux distribution company to join the alliance.

Canonical has announced that it will support the upcoming smart home common standard Matter, an Internet protocol (IP)-based communication standard designed to make smart home devices safe, reliable and seamless.

There has been a lack of common standards in the smart home industry, and Matter standards are designed to improve interoperability and accessibility. Canonical's goal is to support Matter right out of the box on Ubuntu Core, making it the fastest and most reliable way to bring Matter devices to market.

Ubuntu Core is a fully capacitive version of Ubuntu designed for the Internet of things and embedded devices.

Canonical said that Ubuntu Core complements the Matter standard and provides a complete solution for wireless updates and security maintenance-areas that are beyond the scope of Matter. By eliminating the overhead of maintaining secure embedded linux, Ubuntu Core allows companies to focus on the value of their applications. Together, Ubuntu Core and Matter can provide excellent open source solutions for smart home products.

CTOnews.com learned that in May 2015, the connection Standards Alliance released the Matter standard, which was supported by giants such as Apple, Amazon, Google and Samsung.

"Matter" is not only a set of protocol standards, but also a kind of "product certification". A smart home product supports Matter, which means it can access the three most mainstream platforms on the market and connect with most mobile phones and smart speakers.
