Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, September 26 (Reuters)-Optus, Australia's second-largest operator, has been contacting customers to inform them that their data has been compromised, including the personal data of at least 10 million customers, which is equivalent to about 40 per cent of the country's 25.9 million people.
The scale of the database leak makes it one of the largest cyber security incidents in the country's history.
According to reports, the information involved in the case includes the user's name, date of birth, home address, telephone number, e-mail address, driver's license number, passport number and so on. All known information about the data breach is that it came from an offshore entity.
Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, CEO of Optus, said he was sorry and angry about the cyber attack.
Optus officials said it was trying to contact "all customers to inform them about the impact of cyber attacks on their personal information, if any".
"We will start with customers whose ID numbers may have been compromised and they will be notified today," Optus said. "We will finally inform customers who are not affected. No passwords or financial details were disclosed in the accident." CTOnews.com learned that Optus said the data breach did not seem to affect corporate customers.
The CEO pointed out that many Optus customers are now worried about the security of their personal information and are frustrated by the incident.
Australian authorities are investigating possible clues. The Sydney Morning Herald published a report yesterday that Optus had received blackmail threats to pay 1 million dollars in cryptocurrency or hackers would sell the personal information of millions of customers. Optus customer data and other "vouchers" can be purchased from "Dark net" and other sources, Australian Federal Police told Reuters.
Optus pointed out that because law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter, the amount of information it can release related to the data breach is limited. The operator pointed out that IP addresses belonging to hackers moved between different countries in Europe. They advise customers to pay attention to any abnormal and suspicious activities in their accounts.
