Japanese research company Techno Systems Research (TSR) recently investigated the contract manufacturing and equipment investment of semiconductor contract manufacturing companies such as TSMC and Samsung Electronics of South Korea, Nikkei reported yesterday. According to the customer share of cutting-edge logic semiconductors released by TSR, Apple is expected to account for 53% of the global share in 2022, making it the largest customer of 4000nm sophisticated semiconductors, and Apple's iPhone14 sales may affect the trend of device investment in cutting-edge semiconductors.

At present, Apple has become the largest demand for cutting-edge semiconductors. Apple's MacBook laptops and iPad tablets have been using 5nm semiconductors since 2020, and the iPhone has adopted 4x5nm chips since the iPhone 12 series. Although there is a glut of semiconductors at a time when the consumer electronics market, such as mobile phones and PC, is shrinking, the supply of cutting-edge semiconductors at 4 '5nm is still in short supply.

At present, the manufacturers that can supply 5 nm chips are limited to two contract manufacturing companies, TSMC and Samsung. TSR said TSMC's leadership has not changed, with more than 60 per cent of the supply capacity of 4nm chips coming from TSMC. In August this year, TSMC said that 3nm chips "will be mass produced soon". If there is an increase in the number of products with 3-nanometer chips in the final products that will be put on the market in 2023, there will also be a surplus in the supply capacity of 4-5 nanometers.
