CTOnews.com In the same week as the United Nations General Assembly, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced a commitment of $1.27 billion to work with governments, charities, the private sector, NGOs and global and community leaders to save and improve millions of lives.

This year marks the sixth time the Gates Foundation has released its annual Target Defenders Report. The report shows that we are now halfway to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, and almost all key indicators of the global goals are not on schedule. Despite the challenges, the report notes that opportunities exist to address deep-seated challenges such as poverty, inequality and climate change and accelerate progress, provided that the world invests in long-term solutions and innovative approaches.

At the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) funding conference held on the same day, governments and the private sector committed record amounts of money to advance the goal of good health and well-being for all. The funding will help the Global Fund achieve its goals of saving 20 million lives from HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria; building more resilient health systems to prevent future pandemics; and getting back on track to eliminate these diseases globally by 2030. Today's pledges include the Gates Foundation's largest donation to the Global Fund to date-$912 million.
