CTOnews.com September 23, today, owl Noctua announced that in addition to NH-L9a-AM4 thin radiator and NM-AM4-L9aL9i mounting fasteners, all of its CPU radiators and mounting fasteners that support AMD AM4 also support the upcoming AM5 slot. For NM-AM4-L9aL9i mounting fasteners, Noctua is about to launch a new NM-AM5-L9aL9i kit, which will be available free of charge at the end of October.

Officials say AM5 (LGA1718) is AMD's upcoming slot for its next-generation Ryzen 7000 (Zen 4) series processors. In short, with the exception of NH-L9a-AM4 and NM-AM4-L9aL9i, all Noctua radiator and installation kits that support AM4 are directly upward compatible with AM5 slots.

With the exception of NH-L9a-AM4 and NM-AM4-L9aL9i, all Noctua AM4 mounting kits directly match the threads of the standard AM4 original backplane. Because these backplane threads and their specifications are the same on AM4 and AM5, the AM4 installation connected to the standard AMD backplane also supports AM5.

This means that all SE-AM4 models purchased since January 2019 and all Noctua multi-slot radiators directly support AM5 slots. Users who purchased before this date have upgraded to AM4 multi-slot radiators using NM-AM4 or NM-AM4-UxS kits do not need to make any upgrades. Using these upgrade kits, it is possible to make old multi-slot radiators purchased before 2019 that have not been upgraded to AM4 compatible with AM5. For ease of identification, we renamed the NM-AM4 or NM-AM4-UxS kit to NM-AM5/4-MP83 (for radiators with 83mm spacing) and NM-AM5/4-MP78 (for radiators with 78mm spacing).

NH-L9a-AM4 and NM-AM4-L9aL9i are not compatible with AM5 because they need to replace the standard AMD backplane with a custom AMD backplane, which is not possible on AM5. As a result, Noctua has introduced a new NM-AM5-L9aL9i installation kit that will upgrade NH-L9a, NH-L9a-AM4, and NH-L9i radiators to AM5. NH-L9i-17xx cannot be used because it has been technically customized for different height specifications of the LGA17xx platform. Like other installation kits, NM-AM5-L9aL9i will be available free of charge through Noctua.at (starting at the end of October). We plan to launch a new model of NH-L9a radiator with AM5 installation kit in the first quarter of 2023.
