Microsoft said that supporting systemd requires changes to the WSL architecture. Because systemd requires PID 1, the WSL init process started in the Linux distribution will become a child of systemd. Because the WSL init process is responsible for providing the infrastructure for communication between Linux and Windows components, changing this hierarchy requires reconsideration of some of the assumptions made by using the WSL init process.

It is also important to note that the systemd service will not keep the user's WSL instance active after the modification. Closing the Linux console terminates the user session unless you are running a background task.

The user needs to edit the wsl.conf file to ensure that systemd starts at boot, add the following to / etc/ wsl.conf, and note that sudo administrator privileges are used:
