CTOnews.com, September 21 (Xinhua) it is reported that Apple plans to transfer 1/4 of its iPhone production to India by 2025 because the company wants to diversify its supply chain rather than relying too much on China.

JPMorgan analysts also said on Wednesday that they believed Apple would transfer about 5 per cent of iPhone 14 production to India by the end of 2022.

If this is true, it will be a fundamental shift for Apple, since most of its products are currently made in China. Currently, about 5% of Apple's products are made in India, Vietnam and other places.

India began to produce iPhone in 2017 in partnership with suppliers Wizuang Capital and Foxconn. Apple launched iPhone 12 in India in 2021, followed by iPhone 13 in 2022.

CTOnews.com was informed that a report released on September 9, 2022 showed that the Indian enterprise Tata Group was in talks with Wizuang Capital to establish a partnership for iPhone production.

Further details of the plan have not been confirmed, but Tata could buy a stake in Wizuang's Indian plant. The two companies are also likely to build new assembly plants.

Apple's confidentiality may hinder iPhone production in India, which needs to abide by Apple's strict policies. Local executives reportedly inspected Foxconn's assembly line and tried to find all potential ways of leaking.

There are also concerns that Indian customs officials opening parcels for inspection and declaration could be another channel for product leakage.

Ironically, India could also pose a challenge to Apple and iPhone. The Indian government is studying the introduction of universal chargers for all portable electronic devices, which could put more pressure on Apple to use USB-C or other options for its smartphones.

On August 17, 2022, Indian Minister of Consumer Affairs Rohit Kumar Singh held a meeting with manufacturers to discuss the issue.

"India is exploring two general chargers: for smartphones, etc., including the USB Type-C interface."
