According to the latest report released by market research firm BloombergNEF on September 21, the cost of producing electrolytic cells in Chinese factories is only 1/3 of that of their US and European competitors, giving them an advantage in the competition to develop key technologies for environmentally friendly hydrogen production.

The cost of alkaline electrolysis systems in China is about $343 per kilowatt, compared with $1200 per kilowatt for similar systems in Europe and the United States, BloombergNEF said in the report. When the current passes through the electrolytic cell, the water can be separated into hydrogen and oxygen. When using renewable energy, they can produce hydrogen, which provides fuel for everything from cars to steel mills without generating any carbon emissions.

Orders for alkaline electrolysis systems are soaring as more and more industries seek decarbonization, BloombergNEF analysts said in a report. This should help manufacturers build economies of scale and reduce costs by 30% by 2025.

Chinese factories have a more developed supply chain of parts and raw materials, the report said. Due to the huge industrial demand of polysilicon manufacturing and other industries, the scale of China's electrolytic cell manufacturing is already relatively large.

Even taking into account the additional costs of transportation and installation, China's alkaline electrolysis system can be delivered to international customers at much lower prices than European and American manufacturers. BloombergNEF predicts that China's alkaline electrolysis system will account for less than 30 per cent of sales in Europe and the US by 2025, but is expected to increase significantly after that.

"Chinese manufacturers have begun to enter the international market," BloombergNEF said in the report. "between 2025 and 2030, Chinese-made electrolytic products are likely to be popular around the world."
