According to foreign media reports, Nvidia's $40 billion acquisition of Arm announced on September 13, 2020 ended in failure because of major regulatory challenges. Nvidia and Softbank Corp. Group, the owner of Arm, announced the termination of the acquisition on February 14 this year.

Although Nvidia has terminated its acquisition, Arm, which has a huge influence in the global chip industry, is still the target of acquisitions or investments by many companies, and Intel CEO Pat Kissinger has previously said in an interview that if there is a consortium, they may be very willing to participate in some way.

Foreign media reported that in addition to Intel, which is interested in participating, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, Qualcomm and other manufacturers are also considered to be the most likely companies to acquire Arm.

However, some South Korean media reported that the attractiveness of Arm as a target is declining, and industry insiders believe that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are unlikely to be acquired.

For Samsung Electronics, industry insiders believe that they are vigorously developing wafer foundry business, non-wafer manufacturers are their main customers, and the acquisition of Arm is not as useful as they think. Some industry insiders say that wafer-free manufacturers around the world rely on Arm's intellectual property rights to design chips, and if Samsung Electronics acquires Arm, they may terminate their cooperation with Samsung Electronics for fear of leaking trade secrets.

The challenge of antitrust regulation is also the reason why industry insiders believe that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix can not acquire Arm, and Nvidia also abandoned the acquisition. Foreign media also mentioned in the report that the UK still regards the transnational acquisition of Arm as a technology leak and so on.

Although the acquisition is impossible, but foreign media reported that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix acquisition of Arm, there are reasonable considerations. They believe that the business scope of Arm can directly make up for the weakness of the semiconductor industry in South Korea, where semiconductor manufacturing is much more developed than design and packaging.
