CTOnews.com, September 21 (Xinhua)-- Florida startup Undefined Technologies says it has taken an important step forward in developing drones, which it believes can transform the booming drone service industry by using quieter, powerful ion propulsion systems instead of rotors to drive drones.
Undefined Technologies, which made it, passed a test milestone this month when its drone using an ion propulsion system successfully flew for 4.5 minutes with a noise of only 75 decibels. The test marks the company's further progress in the development of the system, with longer flight times and lower noise levels.
Undefined Technologies's original proof-of-concept aircraft last year flew for only 25 seconds and made a noise of 90 decibels. This month's test brings the company closer to the goal of its ion propulsion project, which is to fly drones for 15 minutes at a noise level of only 70 decibels, about the same level as DJI Mavic, but considering that Undefined Technologies's drones are larger and designed to carry heavier payloads.
Tomas Pribanic, CEO of Undefined Technologies, said that over the past year, they have worked hard to overcome many technical challenges related to UAV cooling systems, battery life, avionics and noise reduction technology.
CTOnews.com learned that the ion propulsion system works by forcing charged particles or ions through pairs of electrodes to produce an electric wind to propel the aircraft. Previously, the technology was mainly used in spaceships, which generated more powerful and lasting energy than chemical fuels due to the enhancement of the surrounding vacuum.
Undefined said its "silent" 70dB drones would cause far fewer noise complaints in urban cargo delivery services than propeller designs, and that it aims to produce a series of drones that can be used for delivery by 2024.
