CTOnews.com, September 21 (Xinhua)-- the James Webb Space Telescope captured its first Mars images and spectra on September 5, including Huygens Crater, Horace Basin and the Grand Thetis Plateau, providing a unique view of Mars and complementing data being collected by orbiters, rovers and other telescopes.
The James-Webb telescope revolves around the sun and is about 1.5 million kilometers away from the earth. This unique location means the telescope can study short-term Martian phenomena, such as sandstorms, weather patterns and seasonal variations, NASA said in a blog post.
However, there are some challenges. Because it is so close to the telescope, Mars is very bright, whether it's visible light (visible to the human eye) or the infrared light used by the Weber Space Telescope to detect. This poses a special challenge for the Weber Space Telescope because it is built to detect the extremely faint light of the most distant galaxies in the universe. Weber's instruments are very sensitive, and without special observation techniques, the bright infrared light from Mars is very dazzling, causing a phenomenon called "probe saturation". By using a very short exposure time, astronomers measure only part of the light that hits the probe and use special data analysis techniques to adjust the extreme brightness of Mars.
CTOnews.com learned that the image was taken by a near-infrared camera (NIRCam) and showed an image of the eastern hemisphere of Mars at two different infrared wavelengths. The shorter part is the result of the reflection of sunlight by Mars, showing the common characteristics of the planetary surface in visible light images, while the longer part shows the heat emitted from the Martian surface and atmosphere, as well as the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This will help astronomers identify phenomena and gases that could not be identified by previous instruments and better understand the Martian atmosphere.
