Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen MissBook for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, September 21 (Xinhua)-- Extraterrestrial water was first discovered in a meteorite that crashed into Britain last year, the Independent reported.

Dr Ashley King, a researcher at the Planetary Materials Group of the British Museum of Natural History, presented the discovery at the British Science Festival, the oldest science festival in Europe, which is held in different parts of the UK every year. It is reported that the meteorite, known as the Winchkombe meteorite, hit a road in Gloucestershire in February last year. The 1-pound (0.5-kilogram) meteorite was recovered in about 12 hours, avoiding contamination by minerals and water on Earth.

Dr. Ashley King said the study found that water accounts for 12% of the meteorite sample, and that the composition of the water is very similar to that of water in the earth's oceans.

Dr. King explained: "one of our big questions in planetary science is where does the water on Earth come from? one of the most likely places is through comets or asteroids, in which there is a lot of ice."

CTOnews.com learned that the Winchkum meteorite is a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. On May 17, 2021, the fragment of this meteorite is on display at the Natural History Museum in London.
