CTOnews.com Later this week, Apple will launch the Apple Watch Ultra, a sturdier, more powerful smartwatch for explorers, adventurers and athletes. One of the many unique features of the $6299 watch is the addition of a third button called the Action Button. CTOnews.com has learned that the new action buttons appear in high-contrast international orange and can be easily customized to quickly use a variety of functions, including fitness training, compass waypoints, backtracking and more.

The indented pill-shaped action buttons, colored International Orange, are located next to the display on the left side of the titanium case of the Apple Watch Ultra, between the dual speakers and the alarm.

Pressing and holding the operating button activates the built-in 86 decibel alarm, which can be heard at 600 feet (180 meters) away, for seeking help in an emergency.

The action button is also customizable, meaning it can perform any function configured for it by the user. Apple Watch Ultra users can select initial functions for action buttons when setting up their device. Later, they can adjust this selection in Settings, where the new section lists apps that support the button.

Examples of Apple's action button configurations include Start Backtrack (which uses GPS data to create a path of places the user has been so that steps can be traced), Start Exercise, and Start Dive.

Action buttons can also be assigned to system-level functions, such as turning a flashlight on and off, marking compass waypoints, or starting a stopwatch. In addition, Apple Watch Ultra users can pause the current function by pressing the action button and the side button at the same time.

As action buttons are powered by Apple's new App Intents API, released at WWDC in June, Apple Watch Ultra users can also assign shortcuts to them, bringing huge customization potential, such as the ability to control smart home accessories.

Assigning dedicated shortcuts to operating buttons can also pave the way for additional adaptive functionality. For example, shortcuts with location or time-based actions may allow the action buttons to perform different functions throughout the day.

Depending on which app the action button is used to control, Apple Watch Ultra users will be able to select additional actions for subsequent presses in some cases.

Apple assumes that people use action buttons without looking at the screen, so subsequent button presses should be logical from the first press and make sense in the current context.

For example, an exercise app might let users start an Ironman triathlon on the first press of a button and switch to another segment on subsequent presses.

It is worth noting, however, that the app will not be able to assign functionality for long presses of action buttons, as watchOS 9 reserves this interaction for emergency SOS functionality.
