Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com reported on September 20 that Internet Explorer (IE) retired a few months ago, and some netizens put on a tombstone to commemorate his "death". However, the IE11 browser is not really dead, nor is it completely dead. Microsoft explained that the ban was a long process and that June 15 was just the beginning.

In the next few months after June, before the old IE browser was completely disabled through Windows updates on an unspecified date, users tried to open IE to redirect to IE mode in Microsoft Edge. In fact, some users have even come up with a way to force IE to open in Windows 11, and some think that Windows 11 should not even be bundled with the browser.

Now that Microsoft has detailed the group policy configuration, organizations can use it to better control when to disable IE instead of waiting for an unspecified date.

Group Policy is abbreviated as "disable IE Policy" in Microsoft documentation. As the name implies, it allows organizations to configure exactly when they want IE to stop service in their environment. It basically mimics the upcoming Windows update that will disable IE completely, but the advantage is that organizations can schedule and plan their own IE disable schedules instead of waiting for that unspecified date to come.

Microsoft also recommends this strategy to customers who are unsure whether they can abandon IE completely and are worried about business interruption if it suddenly stops working during the gradual redirection phase.

The following is Microsoft's guide to configuring the disable IE policy in Group Policy:

Ensure that necessary operating system updates are in place. This step will directly update the ADMX files (especially inetres.adml and inetres.admx) on your computer. Note that if you want to update Central Store, you need to copy the .adml and .admx files from the computer that has the required updates, or download the latest Windows 10 administrative templates here.

Open the Group Policy Editor.

Go to computer configuration / Administrative templates / Windows components / Internet Explorer.

Double-click to disable Internet Explorer 11 as a standalone browser.

Select enable.

Under options, select one of the following values:

-if you do not want to notify the user that IE11 is disabled, select never.

-if you want to notify users every time they are redirected from IE11, select always.

-if you only want to notify users when they are redirected for the first time, select once per user.

Select OK or apply to save this policy setting.

CTOnews.com learned that Microsoft also reminded organizations that if they are sure to get rid of IE, it is best to configure this policy by November 1. This is because most organizations enter a holiday freeze in the last weeks of the year, and problems can occur if IE is accidentally disabled during this period.
