CTOnews.com Sept. 20 News, like Office, Microsoft also offers two versions of SharePoint. One is cloud-based SharePoint Online, and the other is locally hosted SharePoint Server. Although SharePoint Online is a recommended solution for organizations, SharePoint Server is still a supported product for users who want to move towards a more autonomous infrastructure. Recently, Microsoft detailed some of the new features of SharePoint Server and plans for the next step.

First, Microsoft provided some details about the SharePoint Server subscription version (SE), which was released in a public preview in July 2021 and officially released in November 2021. It enables organizations to receive new features frequently rather than waiting for the next major version of SharePoint Server to be released.

Looking ahead, Microsoft will launch a new experience to SharePoint Server SE in the form of feature updates. The idea behind this approach is to introduce predictability into the release rhythm. Only two feature updates are released each year, and version naming will be used to indicate in which half a year the update was released. Examples include versions of 22H2, 23H1, and so on. They will be released as part of the monthly public update and will be summarized in subsequent updates.

To stagger launch times and give organizations time to test updates and train employees about new features, Microsoft has also launched two channels: standard releases and early releases. Here's how Microsoft describes them:

"there will be two feature release channels: standard release and early release. As part of this effort, customers will be able to choose the distribution channel that best suits their organization. Most new feature experiences will be introduced to early release channels first, although due to technical limitations, some new feature experiences may be introduced directly into standard release channels. Once the new feature experience is ready for all customers to use by default, it will be moved to the standard release channel. "

In addition, Microsoft announced that the first feature update for SharePoint Server SE is now available through a monthly update in September, the version 22H2. It includes the following features:

Anti-malware scanning Interface (AMSI)

Modern list and DocLibs

Copy and move enhancements

Column format enhancement

Batch editing

Button web part

Select the default website language in the modern self-service website creation pane

New SharePoint RESTful ListData.svc implementation

Nor did Microsoft ignore the old, supported version of SharePoint. SharePoint 2013 workflows are about to get a new tool called SharePoint Workflow Manager. This is an alternative to the service bus and Microsoft Workflow Manager and is designed to integrate with the SharePoint Server environment. It will go on sale later this year.

CTOnews.com has been informed that customers using older versions of SharePoint will also receive a new notification experience, notify them when their product support ends, and provide them with migration strategy guidance. This applies to SharePoint 2013, 2016 and 2019, where the life cycle of the first product will end on April 11, 2023.

Finally, Microsoft announced that the SharePoint Server Technology Adoption Program (TAP) is now accepting nominations. It allows various customers, independent software vendors (ISV), and consultants to access pre-release versions of SharePoint Server for testing and deployment in their own environments, while helping to shape the future of the product.
