CTOnews.com, September 20 (Xinhua)-- researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney have developed a new electric motor that can rotate 100000 laps per minute. The high power density achieved by the new design could help reduce the weight of electric vehicles (EV), thereby increasing their battery life, the university said in a press release.
Electric car manufacturers have been looking for ways to solve the battery life anxiety of their cars, one way is to increase the size of the battery pack, but this will also increase the weight of the vehicle, leading to more problems that need to be solved.

The traditional built-in permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), which is used in electric vehicles, embeds magnets in its rotor to achieve strong torque. However, the low mechanical strength of its iron bridge limits its maximum speed. Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney used a new rotor topology that not only improved the robustness of the motor, but also reduced the rare earth materials needed to produce the motor by as much as 70%.
UNSW researchers also used an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted optimization program that evaluates a wide range of electrical, magnetic, mechanical and thermal aspects to optimize the design of electric motors. The program is developed internally, evaluates 90 designs, and then selects the top 50% of them to generate a new design, which is repeated until the desired optimal state is reached. The final motor used by the researchers is the 120th generation of the program analysis.
According to the press release, the resulting motor has an absolute maximum speed of 100000 revolutions per minute and a peak power density of 7 kilowatts per kilogram, which is twice the highest speed record of the existing built-in permanent magnet synchronous motor.
CTOnews.com understands that if the motor is used in an electric vehicle, it will reduce its speed to a certain extent in order to increase its power. For example, a 200kW motor, with a maximum speed of about 18000rpm, is perfectly suitable for electric vehicles.
In addition to electric vehicles, the motor can also be used in large heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems using high-speed compressors, as well as high-precision CNC machine tools. The motor can also be deployed inside the aircraft engine as an integrated drive generator (IDG) to power the electrical system.
The researchers believe that their motors can be commercialized quickly and brought to market faster than we expected. "if electric car manufacturers like Tesla want to use this kind of motor, then I believe it only takes about 6 to 12 months to modify it according to their specifications," the researchers said. "
