Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com September 20 news, Reuters reported that there was news that Samsung is expected to return to the Russian market soon, but now Samsung has responded to this, saying that "no decision has been made on this matter."
On September 18, Russian newspaper Izvestia reported that a source close to Samsung said that the South Korean company may restart sales in Russia in October, restart its official online store and resume equipment supply to retailers. Due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Samsung Electronics stopped supplying Russia in early March this year on the grounds of geopolitical factors. Although Russia accounts for less than 5% of Samsung's global smartphone sales, Counterpoint pointed out that Samsung was Russia's largest smartphone supplier as of the fourth quarter of 2021, with a market share of 30%, while Xiaomi and Apple accounted for 23% and 13% of the market respectively.
However, Counterpoint data show that for the whole year of 2021, Chinese manufacturers dominated Russia's smartphone market with 44% market share. Russian business newspaper Kommersant reported that the country's smartphone imports fell 38 percent in the first half of 2022.
CTOnews.com understands that in order to maintain imports of consumer goods, Russia's parliament passed legislation in June introducing a so-called "parallel import" program, under which domestic retailers will be allowed to import goods ranging from smartphones to raw materials without requiring approval from trademark owners. In early September, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov claimed that Apple's latest iPhone 14 would be available under a parallel import program. However, consumer electronics imported under the scheme are likely to see sales price increases of up to 20 per cent, although some dealers are willing to bear these costs.
Reports from Reuters show that China's share of smartphone sales in Russia has been rising steadily, rising from 50% in the first quarter of 2021 to 70% in June, with a surge led by Xiaomi, Realme and Glory. Analysts at Russia's GS Group told Kommersant that Chinese consumer electronics brands could capture 90 percent of the Russian market and set out to create their own ecosystem to further strengthen their position.
