Beijing, September 20 (Xinhua) A pilot program carried out by the non-profit organization Global four-day work system (4 Day Week Global) shows that the four-day work system is feasible.

A survey released on Tuesday by Global four-day work found that 78 per cent of the leaders of more than 70 UK companies with four-day work said they had achieved a smooth or "seamless" transition. Only 2% thought it was challenging. Most people (88%) said that the four-day work system was effective.

The six-month pilot program is being carried out in the United Kingdom, the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland and Canada, covering more than 180 companies. In this plan, employers usually switch to a four-day, 32-hour work day (depending on the position and industry), but there will be no pay cut.

In the UK pilot, the companies surveyed had a total of 3300 employees. The program works with the 4-day-a-week exercise (4 Day Week Campaign) and the think-tank Autonomy, and has established data collection partnerships with researchers at Boston College, Cambridge University and Oxford University.

Almost all UK companies participating in the pilot scheme (86 per cent) said they were likely to maintain a four-day schedule after the pilot ended in November, according to the survey. Nearly half (49%) of respondents said productivity had improved, while 46% said productivity remained stable.

"it's very encouraging," said Joe O'connor, CEO of the global four-day system, who had expected output from companies to be more stable. "if this productivity continues, we will see it as a huge productivity success."

However, O'Connor also said that not all the companies that started the trial completed the project. About 1/5 of employers quit, more than half of them at the pre-planning stage. Executives who have participated in the leading study say they face the dual challenge of overcoming the five-day work rules of employees and the industry, and the tricky task of improving workflow in order to achieve the same output in four days.
