According to the latest report from market research firm Counterpoint, 44 million smartphones made in India were shipped from April to June, marking a 16% year-on-year increase in the number of locally made smartphones.

Looking ahead, the upcoming holiday season will further boost shipments made in India due to expected growth in local demand. "

On the manufacturing landscape and strategy, Singh believes: "in the smartphone sector, in-house manufacturing accounted for almost 66 per cent of total Indian manufacturing shipments in the second quarter of 2022, while the remaining 34 per cent came from third-party EMS."

According to reports, OPPO led made in India with a 24% share, followed by Samsung and vivo. Among third-party EMS vendors, Bharat FIH, Dixon and DBG are the leading vendors in the quarter. Padget Electronics (396% YoY), Wistron (137% YoY) and Lava (110% YoY) are the smartphone makers with the fastest growth in shipments this quarter.

CTOnews.com warned that models made by OPPO already include smartphones made for OPPO, realme and OnePlus, while Bharat FIH makes smartphones for Xiaomi and Dixon makes smartphones for Samsung.

In the field of feature phones, Lava leads the Indian manufacturing mobile phone market, with a share of more than 21%. Lava is also a leading mobile phone player among Indian brands in terms of shipments. It is the only company that designs its products in India. Looking ahead, Lava is expected to expand its product lineup and mass production capacity.

Priya Joseph, a research analyst, said: "the Indian government's goal is to make India an electronics manufacturing center within the next four to five years. In an earlier blueprint document, the government identified consumer electronics segments such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, TVs, TWS and electrical components as one of the most promising segments for India's transformation into an electronics hub. To help promote the made in India and Digital India theme, the government raised the total allocation to $936.2 million in its last budget statement. The initiative aims not only to stimulate Indian manufacturing, but also to promote investment in the sector to support job creation, simplify business, reduce imports and promote exports.
