CTOnews.com, September 16 (Xinhua) according to South Korean media The Elec, the low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) OLED developed by LG Display for iPhone 14 Pro Max has entered the final review stage of Apple.

Whether LG Display can win the deal will be decided in about two weeks, according to sources. This is the first time LG Display has tried to commercialize LTPO TFT OLED. Its competitor Samsung shows that it is already making panels for iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and commercialized the technology as early as 2020.

CTOnews.com learned that The Elec said samples provided by LG Display to Cupertino, where Apple is based, showed problems with thin-film packaging and holes on the top of the front camera. As a result, the company has had to replace some of the materials used in the production process, and the new sample is being tested for reliability, the source said.

If Apple refuses to accept new samples within two weeks, LG Display will have to go through a similar process again, delaying approval by another two weeks to a month. If approved in early October, LG Display can immediately start mass production and get more orders.

As competitors were frustrated and demand unexpectedly increased, Samsung showed that it had ordered more devices to make the LTPO OLED. Apple uses LTPO OLED panels in the Pro model, while the standard and Plus models use low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) panels that are easier to make than the LTPO OLED.
