CTOnews.com, September 16 (Xinhua) as the smartphone market shrinks, sales of mobile phone-related components are falling. The global market for CMOS image sensors (CIS) will decline for the first time in 13 years this year due to falling mobile phone sales, slow growth of mobile cameras and a weak global economy, according to a report released today by analyst firm IC Insights.

After weak growth of 4 per cent in 2020 and 5 per cent in 2021, the global market for CMOS image sensors will fall by 7 per cent to $18.6 billion (about 130.014 billion yuan) in 2022, down from $20.1 billion last year, according to the report. Meanwhile, analyst firm IC Insights predicts that the global market for CMOS image sensors will grow by 4% in 2023, returning to $19.3 billion. The CMOS image sensor market will continue to grow over the next few years, reaching $26.9 billion in 2026.

According to the report, Sony firmly occupied the No. 1 position in the CMOS image sensor market in 2021, accounting for about 43%. In the first quarter of Sony's fiscal 2022 (April 1, 2022 to June 30, 2022), Sony Image Sensor's dollar revenue fell 12.4% month-on-month (2% in yen terms). Sony believes the problem of overstocking of its mobile phones and image sensors will ease in 2023.

At present, nearly 2/3 of CMOS image sensors are used in mobile phones. Analyst IC Insights believes that this proportion will fall to about 45 per cent by 2026. In addition to the decline in the growth rate of smartphones, there is also an increase in the demand for cameras from other devices, such as smart cars and medical devices.

As previously reported by CTOnews.com, in May, Shimizu Shimizu, president of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a subsidiary of Sony Semiconductor, said that Sony would increase production capacity at the Nagasaki plant, the main image sensor factory. Sony expects the market for advanced smartphone image sensors to grow by an average of about 10% a year by 2030, while demand for image sensors from the automotive sector will continue to increase.
