September 16, according to foreign media reports, energy giant Shell announced on Thursday that CEO Ben Van Boden (Ben van Beurden) will step down at the end of this year. Wael Sawan, Shell's current director of integrated natural gas, renewable energy and energy solutions, will take over in January next year.

The outgoing Ben van Beurden has led the company through two plunges in oil prices since 2014, moving its headquarters to London and promising to cut emissions by gradually shifting from hydrocarbons to cleaner forms of energy.

It is reported that Wael Sawan worked at Shell for 25 years, and unlike a series of Western Europeans who previously served as chief executive, he grew up in the United Arab Emirates and then went to Canada to study chemical engineering at university. After a career in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas, he became famous in Qatar. Qatar was in charge of the company's LNG projects from 2012 to 2015, and Qatar has arguably become Shell's most important production market.

In 2020, Van Boden laid out a plan to achieve net zero energy emissions by 2050. But since then, the company has struggled to retain talent in low-carbon businesses that are at the heart of its transformation strategy. Last year, a Dutch court ordered Shell to speed up emissions reductions.

Sawan is not as experienced in clean energy as the rest of the company, managing only the natural gas and renewable energy divisions since October. But former colleagues in the industry say this should not be an obstacle to success. Oswald Clint, an analyst at Bernstein, who has been watching Shell since 2004, believes that Sawan can inject new energy into this strategy and is a huge opportunity for Shell to lead the energy transformation.

Sawan also said that it is looking forward to guiding employees to meet huge challenges and seize the opportunities brought about by the energy transformation. While providing reliable, affordable and cleaner energy to the world, it will also be disciplined and value-focused.
