CTOnews.com Sept. 15, September 14, LG officially announced that it has successfully tested the wireless transmission and reception of 6G terahertz (THz) data in the frequency range of 155to 175GHz, with outdoor distances up to 320m.

According to LG, this milestone was achieved on September 7 at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute (HHI) in Berlin, Germany, and represents an important step in the commercialization of 6G THz in indoor and outdoor urban areas, as the reference coverage of urban cellular base stations is about 250m. This is also a major leap forward compared with August last year, when LG proved that it could transmit 6G THz data within 100m of outdoor distance.

6G using UWB UWB frequency has a relatively short range and will experience power loss from transmission to reception. In order to solve these problems, LG, Fraunhofer HHI and Fraunhofer Institute of Applied solid State Physics (IAF) jointly developed a power amplifier that can improve the transmission intensity, and a receiving low-noise amplifier that can improve the quality of the input signal.

Dr. Kim Byoung-hoon, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of LG, said: "with the success of our latest demonstration, we are one step closer to achieving 6G speeds of 1TB per second in indoor and outdoor urban areas. LG will continue to work with research institutions and industry innovators to further consolidate its leading position in 6G technology. We expect 6G to be the main driver of business and new user experiences in the future."

CTOnews.com learned that LG plans to announce all the results of its latest 6G communications tests at a grand 6G summit in Seoul on September 23, and gives an overview of the development of the technology to date.

Discussions on 6G network standardization are expected to begin around 2025, and the commercialization of the technology is scheduled to begin in 2029. Compared with 5G wireless network, 6G will provide faster data transmission speed, lower delay and higher reliability.
