CTOnews.com, September 14 (Xinhua) Volvo trucks are starting mass production of electric versions of the company's most important product line, heavy trucks: Volvo FH, Volvo FM and Volvo FMX. The total weight of these trucks is 44 tons (total combined weight GCW), and the three models account for about 2/3 of the company's sales.

With these new features, Volvo trucks have six electric truck models worldwide-the broadest range of electric trucks in the industry.

"this is a milestone that demonstrates that we are leading the transformation of the industry. It is less than two years since we first demonstrated heavy electric trucks. Now, we are increasing production and delivering these excellent trucks to customers across Europe, which will then be delivered to customers in Asia, Australia and Latin America," said Roger Alm, president of Volvo trucks.

Mass production of Volvo's heaviest electric trucks will begin at the Tuve plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, followed by a plant in Ghent, Belgium next year. Volvo produces electric trucks on the same production line as traditional trucks, thus improving production flexibility and efficiency. The batteries are supplied by Volvo trucks' new battery assembly plant in Ghent.

CTOnews.com has learned that demand for electric trucks is growing rapidly in many markets, one of the driving forces being the need for transport buyers to switch to fossil-free transport to achieve their sustainability goals. Volvo trucks' electric product portfolio covers about 45% of all goods transported in Europe today. (according to statistics from Eurostat Road Freight by distance (2018), 45% of road freight in Europe travel distances less than 300 km. )

"We have sold about 1000 heavy electric trucks and more than 2600 electric trucks. We expect sales to increase significantly in the next few years. By 2030, at least 50 per cent of our trucks sold worldwide will be electric," Roger Alm commented.

Volvo trucks' six range of electric truck models cover a wide range of applications, such as urban distribution and waste disposal, regional transport and construction engineering.
