Mackenzie Mackenzie Scott, ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has just donated two luxury homes in the affluent district of Los Angeles, California. The two houses, with a total value of about $55 million, will be sold to help raise funds for local construction of affordable housing.

Scott donated two luxury homes to the California Community Foundation (CCF), an organization dedicated to donating money to nonprofits in Los Angeles. Jarrett Barrios, senior vice president of CCF, said the group intends to sell the two homes, using 90 per cent of its income to fund affordable housing programmes and another 10 per cent to be spent on migrant integration programmes.

Barrios added: "the urgent need for affordable housing in Los Angeles is related to the homelessness crisis we are experiencing, and the solution to this problem is to increase housing. Scott's gift will ensure a significant increase in our annual spending on building affordable housing and supporting tenants."

Scott, who has a net worth of about $38.2 billion, bought a donated house with his ex-husband Bezos for $24.4 million in 2007. Ten years later, they bought a second house nearby for $12.9 million. It is reported that the two houses together have 11 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, as well as swimming pools and tennis courts.

In March, Scott disclosed that he had donated nearly $4 billion in donations over the past nine months, including $20 million to CCF to establish the Los Angeles Arts Endowment Fund. The foundation's website says it will grant grants to small and medium-sized arts organizations in Los Angeles.

It will take a long time to sell the homes and turn them into available funds, Mr. Barrios said. CCF needs to market and sell the houses before it can decide which organizations will receive annual grants from the proceeds. He added that the organization's ultimate goal is to build affordable housing for low-income people in Los Angeles and to fund housing justice programs that help tenants obtain information and apply for rental assistance programs.

Paula Valle Casta ñ on, director of marketing and public relations at CCF, said when to sell the homes donated by Scott depended largely on the property market in southern California. She says employed real estate agents are not sure how long it will take for the houses to be sold.

"We are very grateful to Scott for his trust in us and her support will enable CCF to rapidly expand its influence in the community," Castaneon said. "at the same time, we are very honored because she thinks our team is so capable that it is possible to sell two homes worth tens of millions of dollars in a short period of time."
