CTOnews.com Apple is moving ahead with its plan to shut down the Dark Sky weather app by the end of the year. When users open the Dark Sky app today, they will see a new pop-up message informing them that "support for the Dark Sky app" will end on January 1, 2023. This comes after iOS 16 debuted, with Apple taking a new approach to the Dark Sky weather app.

Apple had previously planned to shut down the Dark Sky app, website and API by the end of 2021, but Apple continued to upgrade the built-in weather app and launch a new WeatherKit API. Apple originally acquired Dark Sky in March 2020 and has used the technology to make several upgrades to its built-in weather app.

WeatherKit is now available to developers, iOS 16 is available to the general public, and Apple has officially notified users of its intention to turn off Dark Sky.

The notification message in the Dark Sky app reads as follows:

"Support for the Dark Sky app will end on January 1, 2023. Dark Sky forecasting technology is now enhanced and integrated into the updated Apple Weather app. "

Clicking the "More Info" button in the message takes users directly to the App Store listing for the Apple Weather app. iOS 16 released today includes new features for the Weather app:

Severe Weather Notifications: Receive notifications when severe weather warnings are issued near you.

More weather details: Click on any module in the Weather app to display a new, deeper set of data, such as hourly temperatures and precipitation for the next 10 days.

CTOnews.com understands that Apple also provides developers with the WeatherKit API, allowing third-party apps to leverage hyper-localized weather data and focus on protecting user data and privacy. WeatherKit is also much cheaper than other weather APIs, including Dark Sky.
