CTOnews.com, September 13, today marks the 10th anniversary of Apple's first Lightning interface, iPhone 5, which replaces the 30-pin interface that originated from iPod. Phil Schiller, a former Apple marketing executive, described the Lightning interface as "the modern interface of the next decade", a milestone that has now been achieved.

The newly released iPhone 14 / Pro models still have a Lightning port, but it does sound coincidental that Apple is widely expected to switch to the USB-C port on the iPhone 15 series next year.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple has previously provided USB-C ports on every Mac and almost every iPad it sells, and even uses USB-C on Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, some Beats headphones and other accessories. It is rumored that the upcoming 10th generation iPad will also use the USB-C interface, and next year's AirPods charging box and MagSafe battery pack will be no exception.

EU legislation will require all smartphones and accessories to be recharged using the USB-C interface from the fall of 2024. The Verge said the agreement had the biggest impact on Apple because it was the only large smartphone maker that still uses proprietary rather than USB-C interfaces. In 2021, Apple sold 241m iPhone units worldwide, of which about 5600 million were sold in Europe.
